The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife manages hunting across the state’s 26,222 square miles. While Ohio has less public hunting land than many states, its private agricultural lands produce extraordinary deer and turkey hunting, and the state’s wildlife areas and state forests provide important public access. Wild turkey hunting is excellent throughout the state, with the spring gobbler season being one of the most anticipated hunting events of the year for Ohio hunters.

Ohio’s wetlands and Lake Erie shoreline provide outstanding waterfowl hunting opportunities. The Lake Erie marshes in the northwest corner of the state are legendary for duck and goose hunting, and the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area is one of the most productive waterfowl hunting destinations in the Midwest. Ohio is nationally famous for producing record-class white-tailed deer, making deer hunting the state’s most celebrated hunting tradition. The agricultural landscape provides outstanding nutrition for deer, resulting in exceptional antler development and body weights. Wild turkey hunting is equally popular, with excellent spring gobbler hunting across the state’s wooded areas. Ohio’s Lake Erie marshes provide legendary waterfowl hunting, especially for ducks and Canada geese. Pheasant, squirrel, and rabbit round out the small game opportunities available to Ohio hunters.

Small Game Hunting in Ohio

Ohio’s small game hunting traditions center on pheasant, squirrel, and rabbit, with waterfowl hunting along Lake Erie being especially prized. Ring-necked pheasant populations in Ohio have declined from historic highs, but the state’s Division of Wildlife operates a stocking program to maintain huntable populations on public wildlife areas. Gray squirrel hunting in Ohio’s extensive hardwood forests is excellent and remains one of the most popular small game pursuits in the state.

Waterfowl hunting along Lake Erie’s southwestern shore is legendary. The Oak Openings, Magee Marsh, Metzger Marsh, and other wetland areas in Lucas and Ottawa counties are among the most productive duck hunting locations in the Midwest. Mallards, teal, wood ducks, and diving ducks stage in these marshes during fall migration, and hunters who know the area enjoy exceptional shooting. Canada goose hunting in Ohio’s agricultural fields has grown substantially and is now available throughout the state.

Dove hunting opens the Ohio hunting season in September and is popular throughout the state’s agricultural regions. Woodcock hunting during the October migration provides exciting action in alder and aspen thickets along river bottoms. Cottontail rabbit hunting in brushy areas and old fields is productive throughout the fall and winter months.

Big Game Hunting in Ohio

Ohio is one of the premier white-tailed deer hunting states in North America. The state’s rich agricultural landscape of corn, soybeans, and clover provides outstanding nutrition that produces deer with exceptional body weights and antler development. Ohio consistently ranks near the top of states for producing Pope and Young archery records and Boone and Crockett typical entries. The southeast Ohio counties along the Ohio River—Guernsey, Morgan, Muskingum, and Noble—are particularly renowned for trophy buck production.

Ohio offers both archery and firearms deer seasons, with the archery season running from early October through early February and a week-long gun season in late November. The state issues antlerless tags to manage the deer population, and Ohio consistently harvests over 150,000 deer annually. Many of the state’s best deer hunting areas are on private agricultural land, and gaining access to quality private land is the key to success for Ohio deer hunters.

Wild turkey hunting is excellent across Ohio, with the spring gobbler season running from mid-April through May. The state’s turkey population has grown dramatically since restoration efforts began in the 1950s, and birds are now found in all 88 counties. Fall turkey hunting with archery equipment is also available, providing additional opportunities for Ohio turkey hunters.

Public Land Hunting in Ohio

Ohio has approximately 600,000 acres of public hunting land through its state wildlife areas, state forests, and state parks open to hunting. The Wayne National Forest in southeastern Ohio encompasses over 240,000 acres of public land in the hilly, forested region along the Ohio River, providing excellent deer, turkey, and grouse hunting. This is Ohio’s only national forest and represents a significant public hunting resource.

The Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area in northeastern Ohio and the Grand River Wildlife Area provide important public hunting access in the northeastern part of the state. The Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in Lucas County on the Lake Erie shore is one of the most productive waterfowl hunting areas in the Midwest, drawing duck hunters from across the region each fall.

Ohio’s 120+ state wildlife areas range from small parcels to thousands of acres and are distributed throughout all regions of the state. These areas are managed specifically for wildlife habitat and public hunting, and provide critical access in Ohio’s predominantly private agricultural landscape.
